Ferit Kuyas (1955) was born in Istanbul, Turkey. He studied architecture and law in Zurich, Switzerland and
graduated 1982 in jurisprudence from the University of Zurich. Since then he became a self-taught
photographer. He lives and works near Zurich, Switzerland.


He decided to commit himself to photography in the late eighties. Working mainly on personal projects, he
published his first book Industrial Interiors in the year 1998. After visiting Shanghai for commissioned work,
Ferit’s travels brought him often back to China. As a result he published the book Shanghai with fellow
photographers Edy Brunner and Marco Paoluzzo (2000). His most recent project is the book City of
Ambition with cityscapes from the megalopolis Chongqing, China – a four year project. The book is
scheduled to be be published fall 2008 by Mets & Schilt Publishers, Amsterdam.


Ferit’s work has been shown by galleries and museums in Europe, America and Asia, among them
Shanghai Art Museum, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland, Walter Storms Galerie, Munich, Germany,
Photofusion Gallery, London, Stephen Cohen Gallery, Los Angeles, and Fotofestiwal Lodz, Poland.
1999 he received the Kodak Photobook-Award (Kodak Germany) for the book Industrial Interiors and 2002
he was given the Hasselblad Masters award.


His work is represented in private and institutional collections such as the Howard Stein Collection, New
York, the Ministère de la Communauté Française, Belgium and the Hoffmann-La Roche Collection, Basel,
Switzerland.
