As AIPAD returned to the Park Avenue Armory, it was thrilling to see the community come together over four beautiful spring days and celebrate fine art photography in all its forms.

INAUGURAL AIPAD COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION AWARD
Congratulations to Arnika Dawkins, who was presented with the inaugural AIPAD Community Contribution Award, for going above and beyond for the photography community. Dawkins not only created educational opportunities for artists, curators, and experts through the AIPAD Talks programming, but she initiated the virtual talks in 2022, during the COVID pandemic. The virtual talks have continued, allowing audiences worldwide to log on and listen. During the 2023 Photography Show, Dawkins, a member of the board of AIPAD, also reestablished the on-site talks.

The AIPAD Community Contribution Award is a new, yearly intiative started in 2024 by the Board of Directors of AIPAD, to recognize and celebrate an individual, or individuals in the AIPAD Membership that has consistently and profoundly served the fine art photographic community. Each year's receipent is voted on by the AIPAD Membership and is presented at the Annual AIPAD Membership Meeting.

SPRING MEMBER GALLERY HIGHLIGHTS
With spring in full swing, we’re highlighting a few exhibitions on view this month, including two galleries that are celebrating milestone anniversaries.

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, Kicken Berlin has organized the exhibition 50 Years | 50 Photographs, on view through December 20. The works have been selected by Wilhelm Schürmann, who co-founded the gallery in 1974 with Rudolf Kicken (who died in 2014). In venues in Aachen, Cologne, and Berlin, the gallery has shown more than 250 exhibitions, as well as published editions and publications that reflect the history of photography. In 1974, the gallery had its first show in Aachen, Germany, and became one of the first galleries to specialize in photography. Since then, the gallery has shown work from the early days of the medium through photography’s history, giving special weight to such movements as the Bauhaus, New Objectivity, and Czech modernism. Their half-century exhibition includes work by Ed van der Elsken, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Lisette Model, Josef Sudek, and UMBO, among many others.

Paci Gallery in Brescia, Italy, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the exhibition Twenty: The Artists of the 20th Century of the 20 Years of the Gallery. On view through September 20, the exhibition, which fills the entire 8,600-square-foot space, includes work that represent the history of the gallery: Sandy Skoglund’s iconic Still Life from 1979; Mario Cravo Neto’s spare, mysterious black-and-white photograph Ode, 1989; Erwin Olaf’s eerie close-up clown, Matt, from the series Paradise Portraits, 2002; and Nancy Burson’s ominous merged Trump/Putin, 2018. The gallery is also showing shots from 20th-century film sets and Vogue covers by Horst P. Horst and previewing a major exhibition of photographs by Martin Munkacsi that will open in the fall.

The Etherton Gallery in Tucson is showing work by photo-based conceptual artist Alanna Airitam from her series Black Diamonds, portraits of Chosen Few MC, a historically Black motorcycle club. On view through June 22, the exhibition features Airitam’s photographs of this little-known, private culture, which visualize one of the untold stories of Black history in the U.S. Airitam borrows equally from European portrait painting and Black studio photography for her portraits of members of the Tucson, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Long Beach, and San Fernando Valley Chapters of the Chosen Few. She often photographs her subjects in front of idealized landscapes, held up with clamps so that their artificiality is obvious, and focuses on the details of the patches they wear, which have special significance and detail a member’s history with the club.
