Houston Center for Photography (HCP) has announced that it has entered into an agreement to purchase 1150 Bissonnet Street, establishing the organization's first permanent home in its 45-year history and marking a transformative moment for photography in Houston.
Located in the heart of the Museum District, the new campus will provide HCP with an enduring home for exhibitions, education, artist support, and community engagement while preserving two historically significant buildings designed by renowned Houston architect William Ward Watkin.
For more than four decades, HCP has served as one of only a handful of independent photography centers in the United States and the only organization of its kind in Texas. Through free exhibitions, year-round educational programs, publications, artist residencies, fellowships, and community partnerships, HCP has fostered a vibrant ecosystem for photographic practice and dialogue across the region.
The acquisition of 1150 Bissonnet represents not only an investment in the organization's future, but also a commitment to preserving Houston's cultural and architectural heritage.
Designed by William Ward Watkin, founder of the architecture program at Rice University School of Architecture, the buildings exemplify the enduring elegance of the Georgian Revival tradition that helped shape much of Houston's early cultural landscape. HCP plans to thoughtfully adapt the site, preserving its architectural character while transforming it into a contemporary center for photography.
The future campus will expand opportunities for exhibitions, educational initiatives, public programs, and artist support, including an artist residency apartment, makerspace, and new programming. HCP currently offers more than 200 classes and workshops annually and serves over 4,500 K–12 students throughout the Houston metropolitan region in partnership with more than 30 community organizations.
