Catherine Couturier Gallery is pleased to present the work of Houston-based photographer Mark S. Kimbrough. Kimbrough's work explores perception, material tension, and the subtle narratives embedded in everyday objects. Integrating both western and eastern influences, the meticulously constructed scenes recall the technical beauty of 17th century still life painting while playing toward wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic philosophy which celebrates imperfection, simplicity, and flawed beauty. Tension is delicately counterbalanced with serenity in images which critique man's constant quest to manipulate nature, and nature's sustaining defiance.

Kimbrough's photographs have been exhibited throughout Texas, where his practice is recognized for its conceptual rigor and refined visual restraint. Drawing on a background in visual thinking and form-making, his photographic work often occupies the space between realism and abstraction, inviting viewers to reconsider the familiar through a quietly subversive lens.

Alongside his fine art studio, Kimbrough is an internationally recognized industrial designer with more than four decades of professional experience. His work in product design and innovation has been honored with over 35 international design awards, and he holds 25 design and utility patents. Kimbrough is currently an Associate Professor and Co-Director of the Industrial Design program at the University of Houston, where he mentors emerging designers and creative thinkers. His interdisciplinary career—spanning photography, design, and authorship—reflects a sustained commitment to visual inquiry, craft, and conceptual clarity.
