Molly Block: Roadside Relics
Houston based photographer Molly Block, most recognized for her vintage neon signage imagery, will be debuting a new show at Catherine Couturier Gallery on April 8, 2017 titled Roadside Relics. Block, who has a background in architecture, and has spent the majority of her professional career in the non-profit sector, began documenting vintage neon signs and other roadside sights in 2011.
“My focus in photographing vintage signs stems from my appreciation for each sign's uniqueness and the craftsmanship involved in making each sign; each sign truly is a work of art,” Block says. She adds: "Weathering, and businesses changing hands or closing altogether, are among the factors that affect historic signage, so continuing to document what still stands today remains of interest to me."
Block's work has been shown at the Museum of Neon Art in Glendale, California, and in exhibitions in Denver, San Francisco, New York, Vienna (Austria), and in galleries throughout Texas.
Roadside Relics will feature a collection of vibrant and colorful images of signage found along the roads of Texas and across the United States. Her imagery emphasizes the ability photography has to capture beauty in details while being used as a tool to preserve Americana culture and the stories of the past.
Roadside Relics will be on display through May 13, 2017.
